The department is one of the Service Departments charged with the responsibility of overall accounting and management of finances of the Council.
The Department also liaises with Federal, State or Local Government or its Agencies and Individuals or groups or Companies relevant to it to ensure smooth operation of the Council.

Functions of the Finance and Accouncts Department include the following:

• Preparation of Financial Reports ie. Income and Expenditure account and balance sheet
• Maintenance of Control accounts, ie. Revenue/Investment; loans and advances
• Preparation of Yearly Budget
• Investment management
• Purchases and supply matters
• Maintenance of Vote books, preparation of monthly expenditure returns (Recurrent and Capital), and Assets Register
• Cash matters, ie. Cash receipt and payments, Bank Statements etc
• Preparation of Wages/Salaries
• Preparation of payment vouchers
•Monitoring of 10% Sugar Levy Account
• Stores matters, ie. Receipt and issue of stores
