INSIDE THE PARENT MINISTRY
The Hon. Minister, Engr. Charles C. Ugwu OON and the Hon. Minister of State, Ahmed Garba Bichi head the Federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the parent ministry of the NSDC. The Ministry has the sole responsibility of formulating broad policy guidelines for the dfindustrial development of Nigeria. In this regard it has produced the National Industrial Policy.
Mandate
- To draw up policy guidelines and action programmes for sugar sub-sector development
- To provide guide and deliver incentives for development of sugar estates and factories
- To facilitate establishment and support for sugarcane out-grower schemes (credit, inputs etc.)
- To provide and coordinate training, research and development backup for the sugar sector;
- To set targets and measure performance of local sugar producers;
- To set and regulate quality standards for sugar produced locally as well as those imported for use in Nigeria (with SON and NAFDAC);
- To advise government on appropriate tariffs for imported sugar.
Impact of Sugar Sector Reforms
- Establishment of 1.2MT Dangote Sugar Refinery, Apapa, Lagos.
- Establishment of 650,000MT BUA Sugar Refinery, Lagos.
- Establishment of 150,000MT Dangote Sugar Plant, Hadejia, Jigawa State.
- Establishment of 200,000MT Dangote Sugar Plant, Gulala, Bauchi State.
- Establishment of 30,000 Jigawa Sugar Plant, Hadejia, Jigawa State.
- Establishment of 250,000MT Dangote Sugar Plant, Lau, Taraba State.
- Full privatization of existing government owned sugar companies at Numan, Bacita, Sunti and Lafiaji.
- Resucitation of Savannah Sugar Company, Numan, Adamawa State. The company has since commenced production and started an expansion programme.
- Establishment of 10 mini sugar plants (10 – 250TCD) in Agbede, Edo State; Girinya, Kogi State; Kalgo, Kebbi State; Danja, Katsina State; Makarfi, Kaduna State; Kauran Mata, Kano State; Shonga, Kwara State; Konan Mada, FCT; Sara, Jigawa State and Zigau, Bauchi State.
